Embrace Your Disc Golf Identity

What is your disc golf identity?

What are you good at, and do you lean into that identity while playing, or over think it?

After 15 years in sports, I have seen teams and individuals repeatedly ignore their natural strengths and try to make something work that they're not naturally good at.

They attempt to force techniques or strategies that don’t fit their skills or physical makeup.

Trying to win with speed and hustle when their identity should be strength and physicality.

Trying to win the physical side of the sport, when their players are smaller but fast.

This approach often leads to frustration and underperformance.

The key to improving your game is to embrace your disc golf identity and build on your strengths before experimenting with new techniques.

Understanding Your Natural Throwing Style

Disc golf players often fall into two main categories: forehand dominant or backhand dominant.

Many players try to mimic the style of shots they see being used most often, even if it doesn’t feel natural.

For example, a player who is comfortable with forehand shots might try to switch to backhand just because it’s the more common shot selected on a given hole.

Doing so can reduce confidence and consistency.

Instead, if you naturally throw forehand, focus on shaping those shots and mastering them and not trying to comform to a set style of play.

Similarly, if your backhand is stronger but your forehand feels weak, don’t force yourself to throw forehand shots just because others do.

Work on improving your backhand, especially on more advanced shots like turnovers or hyzer flips.

This approach helps you play to your strengths and develop a reliable game plan.

Choosing Discs That Fit Your Game

Disc selection is another area where players often overthink.

If you have a disc that you throw well and feel confident with, stick with it.

Sometimes players switch discs mid-round or overthink their choices because they worry about overusing a particular disc. This can disrupt rhythm and lead to mistakes.

For example, if you find a mid-range disc that consistently lands where you want, don’t hesitate to use it repeatedly on every hole.

Trusting your go-to discs helps build confidence and allows you to focus on shot execution.

In practice, it’s good to try new discs and shots, but during competition, leaning into your strengths often leads to better results.

There have been times in my own game where I used a disc on 5 or 6 holes in a row, so I tried something new because I felt like I wasn't using my whole bag to it's full potential. So I try a new disc only to have it not do what I wanted and immediately wished I had relied on my primary option.

Building Strengths While Addressing Weaknesses

While it’s important to focus on your strengths, you should not ignore your weaknesses.

Instead, use practice sessions to improve areas that support your main skills.

For instance, if you are a forehand player, work on backhand shots that complement your forehand game, setting you up for better looks for your style.

This could mean using a backhand to get to the left side of the fairway to open up space for your forehand to get you as close to the pin as possible.

This balanced approach makes your overall game more versatile without losing your identity.

By strengthening your weaknesses in a way that supports your natural style, you create a more complete player. This method avoids the trap of trying to become someone you’re not and instead builds a stronger version of yourself.

Final Thoughts

Embracing your disc golf identity means recognizing what you do best and using it as the foundation of your game.

Whether it’s your throwing style or your favorite discs, leaning into your strengths builds confidence and consistency.

Practice your weaknesses to support your main skills, but don’t lose sight of what makes you unique.

Next time you play, focus on what feels natural and trust your instincts. Your best game comes from being true to yourself.
