Keep Your Disc Selection Process Simple

Anytime I'm traveling to a new town, I'm sure to take a couple of discs just in case I have the opportunity to play a new course in a new town.

Many disc golfers in a similar circumstance face a common challenge:

How many and what discs do you pack without bringing the entire bag?

Carrying just a few discs can sometimes mean making tough choices, but I actually appreciate this process as a reminder that sometimes, I just need to keep things simple and my game will be just fine.

Most often, my 3 discs that I pack are straight forward, a premium putting putter that is also a straight thrower like a Discraft Roach, an overstable putter as a thrower, and lastly a stable mid-range or fairway driver.

Beyond these, deciding which discs to bring becomes a little more complicated, and most times I often stick with just those three.

I can make an argument for many extra discs, but these 3 cover a good bit of my game and I end up only sacrificing some distance.

This experience highlights an important lesson for myself and others: simplifying your disc selection process can significantly improve your game and reduce stress on the course come tournament time.

Why Less Is More in Disc Selection

Carrying fewer discs forces you to focus on versatility and mastery.

Instead of juggling many discs with overlapping flight paths and characteristics, you learn to trust a smaller set of discs in different situations and become more comfortable with them.

This approach helps you build confidence with each disc, adapt to course conditions using fewer options , and significantly avoid decision fatigue during play

For example, my putter is essential for short, precise shots around the basket and then ultimately finishing out the hole.

An overstable disc, even putter, handles windy or tricky shots that need to fade predictably and allows my to throw a reliable forehand as well.

And a stable mid-range or fairway driver covers most other shots, from controlled drives to approach throws, making utilize release angle to shape the shot I want.

These three discs cover a wide range of shots without overcomplicating your choices.

How to Choose Your Core Discs

When selecting your core discs for travel or everyday play, consider these factors:

  1. Flight versatility: Pick discs that can handle multiple shot types.

  2. Familiarity: Choose discs you know well and can throw confidently. Which ones are your favorite?

  3. Course layout: Think about the terrain and typical shot distances you’ll face. Every course is different, but quickly scope out the average distances and shapes.

For instance, if you expect tight wooded fairways, a stable mid-range that can navigate narrow gaps is better than a high-speed driver. If the course is open with long holes, a reliable fairway driver might be more useful.

Avoid Overcomplicating Your Bag

Many players feel the need to carry a wide variety of discs to cover every possible shot. This can lead to confusion and indecision on the course.

Instead, focus on mastering your core discs rather than constantly switching or having indecision between 2 or 3 options.

Use your discs creatively to handle different shots rather than heavily leaning into disc flight ratings.

Trust and test your skills over relying on specialized discs!

This mindset reduces the mental load during play and often leads to better performance.

Final Thoughts

Simplifying your disc selection helps you focus on your game and enjoy disc golf wherever you go.

Carrying fewer discs encourages you to develop a deeper understanding of each one and adapt your skills to different courses.

Next time you pack for a trip, remember that less can be more.

Don't limit this practice to trips only, use it from time to time at your local course as well for a fun challenge. See how close you can get to your best round at a course with just 3-5 discs. You might surprise yourself!

Choose your discs wisely, practice with them, and play confidently!
