10 Best Understable Disc Golf Putters

One of the most important part of any player's bag, regardless of skill level, is their putters.

While many new players overlook putters and the amount versatility they have outside of 33', the truth of the matter is putters are a HUGE part of a player's game from any distance,

whether it's off the tee, approaching the basket from 200 feet out, or tapping in from 10 feet, you need a reliable putter or 2 to confidently navigate yourself through a course.

A popular choice for not only beginners, but all players to have in their bag as a thrower or for putting is an understable putter.

In layman's terms, understable putter means that its a putter that will "go to the right", when thrown with enough power and on a flat/slightly hyzer release.

Do I need an understable putter?

Understable putters will still fly extremely straight for you when looking to putt and finish off the hole,

but if you're looking for something that a slower arm can handle and still throw straight, or a disc that is great for turnover shots of less than 250 feet,

then an understable putter is the PERFECT option.

I myself bag an understable putter in 2 different plastics,

one for putting and one for throwing,

because I feel that this understable option is extremely valuable for me to have in my bag on all courses.

I will use a base plastic for putting due to enhanced grip, but an understable putter is also my go to for shorter turnover shots and tailwind approach shots that are 250 feet or closer, especially if I want something slower to approach the basket to avoid a skip.

For these shots, I opt for a premium plastic to preserve the flight characteristics and prevent wear from the inevitable ground and tree hits.

Now that you know why having an understable putter is a perfect fit for your bag, lets take a look at not only some of the more popular options, but also some of the

The Deputy is the first on my list because it is the first one I turn to in my own bag for the shots that I mentioned above.

The moderate turn is very reliable for me and if I need it to go straight, I simply throw it with just a touch of hyzer and this disc just simply goes.

I'm also not afraid to throw it off the tee when I need just the slightest amount of turn on shorter holes.

Few names on the professional disc golf scene are more recognizable than Paige Pierce, the multiple time female world champion player.

The Fierce just happens to be one of her own signature discs that she bags and is her go to putter for putting and approach shots.

Interesting enough, it is very similar to the first disc on our list, the Deputy, and that's because when Pierce was a sponsored player of Dynamic Discs/Trilogy, the Deputy was her go to putter. So it makes sense that she would want a comparable option when switching companies.

Like the Deputy, the Fierce is a great option for an understable putter that you will not be disappointed in!

Next on our list of understable putters is the Wedge by Innova Champion Discs.

The Wedge is very similar to the Fierce and Deputy in terms of speed and glide, but with more turn and more fade, meaning it will provide you with a little bit more of an S shaped flight pattern while still maintaining its understable qualities.

Despite being more understable, you will still be able to comfortably throw this disc and except it to turn softly to the right before straightening out and landing.

This disc is extremely beginner friendly not just because of its flight ratings, but also because of its availability in very light weights of less than 150g.

Next up is the very, very glidey understable putter from Latitude 64, the Keystone.

The Keystone may only have a speed of 2, but this putter will glide forever with an impressive, mid-range like rating of 5.

I bagged a Keystone for a long time after receiving as part of the Trilogy challenge and loved using it for nice, soft approaches where low speed was desirable to prevent a big skip past the basket.

I loved it, and I'm sure you will too!

One of the most straight flying options on our list, the Prodigy PA-4 is an excellent option for players who are looking for a putter that can be turned over, but can fly nice and straight with little effort and a flat release as well.

The PA-4 with its speed and glide of around 3 make this disc a solid option whether you're looking to use it for putting, approaches, or both!

The Swan 1 Reborn is naturally an upgraded version of the Swan 1, also by Westside Discs.

This understable putter will fly very similarly to the PA-4 listed above, but with extra turn and without the fade.

It differs from the first Swan in it's slightly faster speed and longer glide, but most noticeably its increased turn from -1 to the current version of -2.2.

This increased turn will naturally make this disc much easier to throw for beginners and a great hyzer flip or turnover disc for more experienced arms.

Number 7 on our list is a second understable option from Latitude 64, the Ruby.

The Ruby is a very glidey, high turn putter that will seemingly glide like a mid-range despite its speed of just 3.

With a fade of near 1, this disc will fly relatively straight with a hyzer release before fading ever so slightly back to mid-line.

Another straighter flying understable option from Discraft, is the classic APX.

The APX is very very similar to Innova's Aviar, but with just enough understability for it to not be as stable and straight flying.

If you're looking for a putter that bridges the gap between stable and understable, this is your disc.

The Spin by MVP is another very popular option of many players looking to bag an understable putter.

Its popularity is due not only to the unique, 2 plastic feel that MVP and Axiom discs are known for, but also for its desirable flight ratings that are near identical to the first 2 discs on the this list, the Deputy and Fierce.

For these reasons, the Spin is an excellent option for you to consider when filling your understable putter slot!

Last but certainly not least is from a brand that may not be as common, but is definitely just as good, Daredevil.

The Daredevil Woodchuck is another disc that rivals stable putters like the Aviar and Roach but with just a hint of turn that make it extremely beginner friendly for putting and approach looks when close to the basket.

Despite the fact it may be a newer brand to you, this disc should not be overlooked in your search for an understable putter!
